Welcome to J&R’s Smokehouse located in Wind Gap PA between Stroudsburg, Nazareth, Easton and Bethlehem.
A Brief History of Wind Gap
What is a wind gap? In simple terms, it is a water gap that no longer has a stream flowing through it. According to some geological surveys, some rock formations in our area are not native, but believed to have been deposited by an ice flow originating in New England.
Recorded names for this depression came from various sources, all have emphasis on Gap: Dio Wind Gap, Vint Gap, Win Gap, and Dry Gap.
The Borough of Wind Gap better known throughout historic Pennsylvania as “The Gateway to the Poconos,”
was incorporated in August 1893. The Gap was a natural passageway for the Indians, settlers and the military. The stone house on upper Broadway was at one time a tollgate.
A contingent of interested citizens petitioned the court to grant a charter making a section of Plainfield Township, called Wind Gap, a self-governing borough. The first meeting of the council was held on August 2, 1893 to appoint a police committee who in turn appointed two police officers. Council, at the September 20, 1893 meeting, voted to purchase property on which to construct a jail and a borough building. The lot, site of present-day Borough offices, was obtained for $100.00.
The geographical location of Wind Gap provided an ideal intersection for transportation companies operating trains and trolleys in the late 1800s and the early 1900s. The trolleys served the area and its people well. Many summer passengers used the service as a means to visit the old Wind Gap Park, and the slaters used it to travel to and from work.
